Logging in J2EE applications is complex because of several contributing factors. Moreover, the logging requirements can vary depending on the type of application. For example, in a simple J2EE-based Web application, it might be sufficient just to log the access and operations performed, but in a complex application, you might need to log information about users accessing the application, time of access, and the sequence of operations performed by a particular user. In general, you should note the following characteristics of logging in the J2EE environment: Distributed: J2EE is distributed by nature. Any logging activity associated with the J2EE environment must also be distributed. Multi-User: Multiple users from various locations often access J2EE applications. Clustered: J2EE applications are often deployed in a clustered environment to enhance performance. Maintaining log information across multiple clusters is a challenge. Centralized: Logging information needs to be centralized to be effective. Chronological: In many J2EE applications, order of information is very important. We need to ensure that logging information is in chronological order. Identification: Logging information needs to be stamped with some unique identifier to separate one invoker from another. Otherwise, information is too large to filter against any particular operation or user, or against the invoker of the application.
